Highlighting SCBC: Welcoming the Dragon Boat Festival and Race

Every year, on the fifth of May of the lunar calendar, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with dragon boat race at SCBC. The second of June was a clear day with white clouds and the azure sky mirrored directly on the water's surface as three dragon boats ready to race sat by the edge of the pond overfilled with excitement. The Sixth Annual Dragon Boat Race was about to begin in the central lake by the Business Plaza. With the race underway, competing members brought with themselves the winning spirit of courage and the ability to overcome hardship, while each stroke of the oars met with the drum rolls at the race. A sense of tension was felt in the air, yet that tension was diluted with overwhelming remarks of warmth and enthusiasm for all the competitors.

Besides visiting the sister universities in Germany and Spain, the SCBC delegation also made a trip to Portugal in preparing for the inception of the Portuguese language major at SCBC by meeting and conversing with Mr. Yanbin Lu and Ms. Suoying Wang, a couple who specializes in teaching and translating the Portuguese language.Beginning in 1977, Mr. Lu and Ms. Wang initiated a program of Portuguese language at the bachelor level at Shanghai University of Foreign Studies, where they taught for more than a decade. Then, in 1991, they immigrated to Portugal, where they first taught Chinese and published various texts that were deemed materials to be read as part of the Portuguese Reading Initiative. In 2014, Ms. Wang, while at the University of Aveiro, established a chapter of the Confuscius Institute, which put in progress the presence and the learning of the Chinese language and culture in Portugal. Mr. Yanbin Lu and Ms. Suoying Wang both have years of experience in teaching Portuguese, as well as experience in school development and resource management. With their help and expertise, the Portuguese language major at SCBC will be founded on solid ground.
