Executive Vice President Lai Zhili Visits Four Universities in Egypt

From November 10 to 16, Executive Vice President of SCBC Lai Zhili, in company with Dr. Chi Shengnyu dean of the School of Asian Languages and Cultures, and Prof. Yang Jianrong, director of the Department of Arabic Language, went on a tour of visits to four universities in Egypt, namely, Ain Shams University, Suez Canal University, Tanta University, and Alexandria University.

On November 11, the group came to Ain Shams University in the capital city of Cairo and received a warm welcome from its president Prof. Abdel Wahab Mohammed Ezzat and the dean of the Faculty of Languages. An agreement on cooperation and exchange was signed after the two sides reached consensus on such issues as student exchange programs, “2+2” collaborative programs, and scholarships. Then Mr. Lai and his companions paid a visit to the “Confucius School” of which Prof. Yang Shaogang of SCBC now serves as the Chinese dean.

The next day, the group was received by Dr. Atef Mohammed Abo Elnour, president of Suez Canal University in the capital city of Ismailia in the Ismailia Governorate of Egypt. After briefing on both institutes of higher education at the meeting, the two sides reached an agreement of intent to cooperate. Later, the group visited the Arabic Language and Translation Center accompanied by the center’s directer, Dr. Elsayed Moustafa Ebeed. They also had a good look at the Chinese students’ lives and studies at the University in their tour around the campus, classrooms, and dormitories.

Then on November 13, the group visited Tanta University located in the capital city of Tanta of the Al Gharbiyah governorate in the west of Egypt. Mr. Lai shared his ideas with University Vice-President for Education and Student Affairs Prof. Al-Refa'i Ibrahim on such issues as student exchange programs, “2+2” collaborative programs, and the establishment of a Confucius institute. They signed an agreement on international exchanges and a memorandum on collaboration of building Confucius Institute at Tanta University.

In the visit to Alexandria University in the city of Alexandria on November 14, Mr. Lai had discussions with his counterparts on exchange programs. During the day, the group called on SCBC students studying there and alumni working in Egypt. Mr. Lai hoped that SCBC students try their best to live up to the expectations of their parents and alma mater. He also encouraged SCBC alumni to work hard and contribute to the development of bilateral trade between China and Egypt.

This tour of visits is of great significance. As part of SCBC’s efforts to seek more diversified internationalization of education, it helps create a better learning environment with more opportunities for SCBC students of Arabic language to study abroad.
