SCBC hosts conference on College English Teaching in Universities of Foreign Language Studies
The College English Teaching in Universities of Foreign Language Studies Collaborative had its 10th annual conference held at South China Business College on December 7, together with its featured event Teaching Plan Presentation Contest, on the theme of “applying information technology in building high-quality class and improving effectiveness of teaching”. South China Business College, as the co-sponsor of the annual conference, had entrusted its Faculty of College English with the organization of the conference, which was attended by heads of College English and representatives from 24 universities of foreign language studies in China, and addressed by Prof. Wang Xinjie, vice president of South China Business College.
In her opening speech, Vice President Wang expressed her warm welcome to the guests on behalf of South China Business College and briefed them on the facts and characteristics of SCBC and its Faculty of College English. According to Wang, with the implementation of the the “Belt and Road” initiative and the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, we have seen in the job market stricter requirements for graduates’ foreign language proficiency. She said that this conference was also an opportunity for SCBC to improve its quality of language teaching, as experts and scholars have gathered at SCBC to explore the reform and development of foreign language education in the new era and their opinions and suggestions will be valuable and help boost SCBC’s College English teaching.
Prof. Liu Jianda, vice president of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and deputy director of the National Advisory Committee on Teaching Foreign Languages to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, delivered a keynote speech on building high-quality class in College English teaching from the perspective of modern information technology. He introduced the guiding principles of related policies issued by the Ministry of Education and gave suggestions on how to build high-quality class with the help of modern information technology, with regards to reforms in course structure, teaching content, and teaching methods.
Prof. Jiang Xueqing, distinguished professor of Zhuhai College of Beijing University of Technology and member of the National Advisory Committee on Teaching Foreign Languages to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, shared his experience of building high-quality class with the application-oriented College English class that combines MOOC online learning and off-line tutorial sessions according to the BOPPPS framework.
Prof. Lu Wei, dean of the School of Applied Foreign Languages of Beijing Language and Culture University, talked about foreign language teachers’ academic career under the backdrop of China’s vision of building a community of shared future. She pointed out and analyzed the problems that foreign language teachers haven’t yet understood the importance of doing research, or even if they have, their efforts may turn out not as much as they have expected. She also identified what advantages they have and how to make full use of such advantages in academic research.
Prof. Yang Manzhen from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies introduced the theories that support the assessment framework of formative and comprehensive evaluation and shared her own practice in College English class in which she revolutionized the traditional class and applied multiple methods of teaching and evaluation.
The Faculty of College English is responsible of teaching English Language to students of non-foreign language majors at South China Business College. With a focus on training students’ ability to use the language, the Faculty offers courses in English for General Purposes, English for Special Purposes, and Intercultural Communication. It has been making efforts in improving the quality of teaching through the years by adopting pedagogical thinking and taking advantage of information technology. As South China Business College has launched its 2020 Campaign for Quality Education &Teaching, this timely conference has been an inspiration for the teachers of the Faculty, who would draw upon the opinions and experiences of the participating experts and scholars and explore new ideas and methods of how to improve College English teaching at SCBC.
Wang Ruiying claims champion in Teaching Plan Presentation Contest
The Faculty of College English has reaped extraordinary results in the Teaching Plan Presentation Contest, the featured event of the 10th annual conference of the College English Teaching in Universities of Foreign Language Studies Collaborative (the Collaborative) held at South China Business College on December 7, with Wang Ruiying claiming the champion, He Zijian winning a first prize, and Song Canhua, a third prize.
34 College English teachers from 19 colleges and universities, including Beijing Foreign Studies University, Beijing Second Foreign Studies University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Xi'an Foreign Studies University,Sichuan Foreign Studies University,etc.have completed for the titles. The contestants are required to give a eight-minute presentation to explain and justify their designs of class and methods of teaching. They are not allowed to reveal their personal information in the process and their performance would be graded anonymously by several judges, who are deputy chairmen of the Collaborative, in terms of the objectives, materials, procedures, and methods of teaching as well as the proficiency of language.
The contestants have showcased their charismatic teaching style in their presentations of various courses. In their brisk, confident manner and clear, engaging articulation, the three teachers from SCBC have stood out in particular with well-orchestrated teaching plans specially designed for their own courses featuring a perfect combination of on-line and off-line resources.
