SCBC has three more programs approved as provincial first-class undergraduate programs

According to the recent announcement from the Department of Education of Guangdong province, SCBC has another three programs (English, Korean, and Japanese) approved as provincial first-class undergraduate programs, in addition to the previous two provincial first-class programs of Translation and International Economics and Trade as well as one national first-class program, Accounting.

SCBC has always attached great importance to the development of its undergraduate programs. A total of five provincial first-class programs has been results from its long-term efforts to reform liberal arts and engineering programs in ways that cater to regional economic and social development and to optimize its disciplinary system through creating distinctive programs for higher level of undergraduate education. In the future, SCBC will give full play to the leading role of the first-class undergraduate programs and continue to improve and enhance their competitiveness so that they help achieve the goal of building SCBC into a high-level practice-oriented private university.

Introduction to the three newly-approved provincial first-class undergraduate programs

English: Inaugurated in 2003, the English program has been built on the philosophy of training English speaking professionals according to the framework of new liberal arts. The program has established itself in Guangdong province with influence radiating from the Greater Bay Area and even across the whole country. Its goal is to build itself into a provincial first-class practice-oriented undergraduate program with strong academic strength and good social reputation. In the past three years, the average passing rate of the TEM 4 was 67.73%, exceeding the national level by 13.79 percentage points and the level of its own kind by 31.03 percentage points. The students of the program have won many awards in multiple national competitions, including the first prize of Love Future Cup” National English Writing Competition for College Students, 4 Honorable Mentions in the Han Suyin International Translation Contest in 2021, and Honorable Mentions in the CC CUP Translation Contest.

Korean: The program started to enroll undergraduate students in 2008. It follows the training pattern of Korean-English and foreign language + specialty, and adopts such collaborative education model of 3+1, 2+2, “foreign language + specialty” in which SCBC and foreign partners jointly design training programs with special attention paid to the effective connection of the two education phases. In particular, it has created a virtual teaching and research team with partner universities in South Korea to build a curriculum system that emphasizes both Korean and English. The program focuses on the development and application of two foreign language skills.

Japanese: The program started in 2006. It was granted the right to confer bachelor's degree in 2012, and was approved as a provincial pilot program for comprehensive reform in 2014. The orientation of the program is to meet the demand for application-oriented, versatile and innovative talent with Japanese proficiency to work for the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Shenzhen Demonstration Zone of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics and the Belt and Road Initiative. It is characterized by the training pattern of Japanese language + specialty in Economics and Trade, practical teaching and internationalization. The program strives to enhance students' Japanese language proficiency, cross-cultural communication competence, and the ability to tell Chinese stories. In the future, it will endeavor to become a leader of Japanese language education with distinctive characteristics in the Pearl River Delta so as to make the list of national first-class undergraduate programs. According to the Alumni Association website, the program is ranked the fourth in the country for Japanese language majors in independent colleges.


SCBC students win second prize in 2021 Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling

News from the Organization Committee of the 2021 Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling showed that SCBC’s team of students from the School of Computer Science, which consisted of Chen Beiwen, Wu Jianjian and Zhou Zhijie, won a second prize in the “Higher Education Press Cup” Contest in Modeling this year.   

The School of Computer Science has always stressed the importance of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling because participation in such activities is not only conducive to students' ability to analyze complex problems comprehensively as well as their scientific computing ability, but also helpful in stimulating their sense of innovation and their awareness to use mathematical methods to establish data models and computer technology to solve practical problems. The preparation for the Contest started early in 2021. Professor Zhu Yufang, also director of the Mathematics Department, and Associate Professor Jiang Yinshan selected 15 contestants that fell into five teams according to their respective characteristics. Of the 15 contestants, 11 are students of Computer Science and 4 major in Economics and Management. Before the competition, Dr. Yang Deniu from the Mathematics Department organized several intensive training sessions and offered some special guidance to the participating team members. SCBCs teams have been successful in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling winning a few awards, which showcases the steady improvement of SCBC students' professional competence and comprehensive practical ability.

It is reported that the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling was inaugurated in 1992 and is one of the first 19 competitions listed in the College Competitions Ranking. The scale of competition has been unprecedented in 2021, with 140,000 contestants in 49,529 teams (45,075 undergraduate teams and 4,454 specialist teams) from 1,566 colleges and universities all over China and the United States, Malaysia and other countries.
