Xia Xiangqin wins first prize in FLTRP Debate Open
In the 2022 FLTRP Debate Open·Macau & Greater Bay Area Universities Debating Championship held on March 13, Xia Xiangqin, a junior of Translation from the School of English Language and Culture, won the first prize together with her teammate Yang Yi of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University.
This debate competition, hosted by the University of Macau,was also a qualification contest for the “FLTRP`ETIC Cup” National English Debating Competition, one of the 57 academic competitions recognized by the Ministry of Education for college students.The competition encouraged in-depth analysis and critical thinking and provided a good opportunity for college students to express their own views on practical issues on international affairs and domestic developments. The topics for debate covered many aspects of social life, including social media, talent shows, education, junk food, and tourism.
The contestants were given only 15 minutes in preparation and then 7 minutes to speak after being given the debate topic. Under the stress of time, they must be clear-minded and articulate enough in order to win. More over, they should be knowledgeable and well-versed on the various topics. Supervised by Chao Jiayu, Xia Xiangqin and her debating partner competed against 120 teams from renowned universities such as Peking University, Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University and Hong Kong Baptist University. After five rounds of competition, Xia’s team won the first prize with accumulated points ranking No. 21.
The competition was not only a platform for students to showcase their capabilities, but also a test for SCBC’s practical education. The contestants had gained a lot through this valuable experience, for example, a better understanding of their English debating level, improvement in their language application ability, adaptability, and critical thinking, and enhancement of their horizons and multicultural perspectives.
