Dr. Liu Lanfeng receives funding from Humanities and Social Sciences Fund of MOE
According to the recent announcement from the Department of Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education, Dr. Liu Lanfeng’s project “Financial Support for High-Quality Development of China’s Service Trade in the Context of Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Goals——An Empirical Research Based on NOEM Model” is seen on the list of general projects approved to receive funding from MOE’s Humanities and Social Sciences Fund for Planning Programs, another breakthrough in SCBC’s effort to apply for ministry-level projects. This is the first time that SCBC has made it in this category of Planning Programs, after it obtained funding in the category of Youth Programs twice respectively in 2015 and 2020.
Based on the high-quality development goals and the assessment metrics of high-quality development of trade in services stated in the Plan for Development of Trade in Services during the 14th Five-Year Plan Period, Dr. Liu’s project aims to find ways to drive high-quality development of trade in services by exploring how the financial systems can shift to low-carbon and high-quality development path and how policy-based finance can support green and low-carbon innovation in science and technology in the context of “Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Goals” .
Dr. Liu Lanfeng, the project leader, is currently the director of the Center for Polar Issues Studies at SCBC. The Center for Polar Issues Studies was approved and filed as a center of Regional and National Studies by the Ministry of Education in June 2017. The funding secured by Dr. Liu’s project this time will surely boost the development of the Center and even the scientific research at SCBC in general, as it can help lay a solid foundation for attracting high-end specialists, training faculty, and building high-level basic disciplines.
Chao Jiayu claims first prize in the SFLEP National Foreign Language Teaching Contest
From September 24 to 25, the national final and grand final of the 12th SFLEP National Foreign Language Teaching Contest were were held successfully in the category of foreign language programs. Chao Jiayu, a teacher from the School of English Language and Culture and the only contender from Guangdong division in the English program category, won the first prize with her excellent performance. At the same time, Chao Jiayu and her team, including Yang Manzhen, Yang Wenying, Li Chunmei and Fang Hui, received second prize for teaching design.
The contest was divided into two stages: the final and the grand final. The contestants were required to conduct online teaching and their performance were evaluated by judges both online and offline. Chao Jiayu showed her comprehensive English skills, innovative teaching tactics, good classroom management, and critical thinking in the two rounds of “classroom lecture” and “impromptu lecture”, all highly spoken of by the judges. As the only winner from a private university, she was one of the first prize winners in this year’s contest, ranking second in the final and third in the grand final in terms of total scores.
Zhang Zhijie win first prize in the 13th “Central South University—The World of English Cup”
National Translation Competition
According to the announcement from the 13th “Central South University—The World of English Cup” National Translation Competition on September 30, six students of SCBC turned out winners of the competition, of which Zhang Zhijie, a senior English Translation major from the School of English and Culture, won first prize in the Chinese-to-English translation standing on the top of the national ranking. SCBC also received an award for organizing students’ participation in the competition.
The competition opened its submission channel in May this year, with more than 7,000 contestants from hundreds of higher education institutions, high schools, government organizations and enterprises as well as freelance translators across China. The success of SCBC students in the competition, which was a result of their solid English foundation and translation competence, has showcased one of the highlights of SCBC’s undergraduate education: excellent foreign language proficiency.
The competition was organized by Central South University and supported by the Social Sciences Translation Committee of Translators Association of China, CATTI Project Management Center of China International Communications Group, Discipline Committee on English-Chinese Translation Studies of China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, and provincial translators associations.
